Toyon Branch Flute in Am
Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) is a beautiful perennial shrub native throughout the western part of California and the Sierra foothills and found within the chaparral, coastal sage scrub and mixed oak woodland habitats. This particular branch was gathered at the beautiful Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, with permission from a Ranger there, who had trimmed it away from one of the trails. As with all Dryad Flutes, this Toyon was bored out intact, preserving the natural strength, beauty and unique characteristics of the branch's wood and bark. With a bright, clear, sweet and resonant voice, this flute has been accurately tuned to a 6 hole minor pentatonic Am scale. There are a couple of in-tune higher register notes, as heard in the sound sample. To help prevent wet-out, the bird has been fitted with a cedar shoe, for its moisture absorption qualities, and a drain hole has been drilled into the air chamber covered with the Deer hide lacing that secures the bird to the nest. Crushed Turquoise has been inlaid into the three knots.
