Respectfully gathered from
the Smith
River Watershed in Northern California, this Douglas Fir
(Pseudotsuga
menziesii) branch flute sings with the beauty and ancient spirit of its
old growth forest home. With a rich and
resonant voice tuned to an Fm
(A=440) pentatonic scale, modes 1 & 4, this one of a kind flute
was bored out unsplit, the
natural
appearance, strength and integrity of the branch's growth rings left
intact. Much of the bark has been left on, along with several
patches of lichen and moss, well sealed to maintain adherence.
A few knots have been inlaid with green turquoise and the
exposed wood has been sealed with shellac, sanded and buffed
to a natural shine and
coated with carnauba wax. This naturally
beautiful flute
measures
21 1/4" in
length, and has a slightly tapered sound chamber from 1 1/8" diameter
at
the sound
hole down to 7/8" at the foot of the flute. Green
tanned deer
lacing with green turquoise beads lends its strength to secure the
bird to her nest. To help prevent wetout, the bird
has been
fitted with a cedar shoe, and a drain hole, covered by the
lacing, has
been designed into the air chamber.
