My wife Sabine and I are blessed to live just a few miles from one of the wildest stretches of land left on the Southern California coast, the 2,000 acres of Torrey Pines State Reserve.  Home to what is considered the rarest pine in the United States, it offers magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean from trails that wind through Coastal sage scrub plant community down and around sandstone cliffs to the beautiful beach below.  As an endangered species, Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) grows in the wild only in this bioregion of San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island.  It is also planted as an ornamental tree for use in drought tolerant gardens and landscapes.  It was from a downed Torrey Pine tree in a private garden, not far from the Reserve, that the branch for this flute was gathered -- rescued from the jaws of the chipping machine to live on, continuing to bless the world with its spirit and beauty--and as this branch flute, its song.

I was able to leave all of the uniquely scaled, spiral patterned bark on this remarkably beautiful, unsplit Torrey Pine branch flute.  Its bark, perfectly preserved with no scars to mar its amazing symmetry, is a wonderful representation of the Fibonacchi sequence and Golden Ratio often found in the natural world.  Measuring 21 3/4" in length, this exquisite branch flute is voiced to a clear and soulful concert/recording quality Gm pentatonic scale, modes 1&4.  Crushed malachite has been inlaid into the front and back of the bird.  Deer leather lacing with malachite and horn bone beads secures the bird to its nest.  To help prevent wetout, the bird has been fitted with a cedar shoe and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the air chamber.

The magnificent Torrey Pine tree sings for all threatened or endangered life forms and ecosystems on this good Earth
through this rare and very beautiful branch flute!
