Lovingly made from an unsplit Peppertree branch (Shinus molle), this naturally beautiful flute is clearly and resonantly tuned to a low Cm pentatonic scale, modes 1&4, playing 2 upper register notes.  The unique location of a side branch allowed for the creation of two separate blow holes, making this one-of-a-kind flute conveniently switchable from side-blown to end-blown, through the use of a cork stopper.  Both positions are comfortable to play in, with a slightly different feel to each.  The cork stopper wears a securely attached Peppertree cap to allow for an easier grip when switching positions.  The solid bore sound chamber, honoring the strength and integrity of the tree's growth rings, is slightly tapered from 1 1/4" in diameter at the sound hole to 1 3/32" at the foot of the flute.  Finger holes are ergonomically offset, 1 3/8" between holes from center to center.  Holes are about 3/8" in diameter to allow for maximum volume.  Total length of flute is 27", weighing in at about 1 1/2 lbs.  All knot holes have been inlaid with crushed malachite stone.  Deer leather lacing with malachite and gold-plated brass beads secures the bird to its nest.  To help prevent wetout, the bird has been fitted with a cedar shoe and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the air chamber.  The branch for this flute was rescued from a tree that had been cut down for a housing development, but that lives on now as one of the most unique and finest playing Dryad Flutes I've made!

Shamanic use of Peppertree:  Brought to Mexico hundreds of years ago by the Spaniards from South America, Peppertree now grows abundantly in the wild there, where it is known by the name of "pirul", also naturalizing throughout the American Southwest.  It has become an important part of Mexican traditional medicine, as its branches are used to "sweep" a person's body and thus "cast away all bad luck" and the "evil eye".  This ceremony, called "una barrida con pirul" is common practice in many rural communities in Mexico today.
