Measuring 21 1/2" in length, with four tuning holes, this unsplit Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) branch flute is clearly and sweetly voiced to a 6 hole Cm pentatonic scale, playing 4 upper register notes. The bark has been left on, well sealed to insure adherence to the wood. To aid against wet-out the bird has been fitted with a cedar shoe, for its absorption qualities, and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the air chamber. Deer lacing, with turquoise and gold-plated brass beads, secures the bird to its nest. Elderberry is a traditional flute tree for California indigenous cultures, as its big, soft pith lends itself to easy removal, keeping the branch flute intact and unsplit.
