Measuring 27" in length, with four direction/tuning holes, this elegant, unsplit Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana) branch flute is clearly and soulfully voiced to a 6 hole, mid-range F# minor pentatonic scale, playing 3 upper register notes. The bark has been removed from the midsection of the branch, exposing the finely finished wood grain. To aid against wet-out the bird has been fitted with a cedar shoe, for its absorption qualities, and a drain hole has been designed into the air chamber. Deer lacing, with turquoise and gold-plated brass beads, secures the bird to its nest. Elderberry is a traditional flute wood for California indigenous cultures, as its big, soft pith lends itself to easy removal, keeping the flute branch intact and unsplit.
