Measuring 20"
in length, this Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus
virginiana)
unsplit branch flute is clearly and soulfully voiced to a
mid
range G#m
pentatonic scale, modes 1&4, playing two upper register
notes. Most of the bark has been removed,
exposing the
finely finished, light colored sapwood of the branch, a
streak of
the
red colored heartwood showing just south of the sound hole.
Crushed Turquoise has been
inlaid in several of the knots. Deer leather lacing
with Turquoise and Brass beads secures the
bird to its nest. To help prevent wet-out, the bird has been
fitted with a cedar heartwood shoe,
and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the
bottom of the air chamber. The branch for this flute
was gathered from a relative's ranch in Oklahoma.
