Measuring 24"
in length, with four direction/tuning holes, this Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus
virginiana)
unsplit branch flute is soulfully and expressively tuned to a
mid
range Gm
pentatonic scale, modes 1&4, playing three upper register
notes. Most of the bark has been removed,
exposing the
finely finished, light colored sapwood of the branch. Some of
the
red colored heartwood remains inside both the air and sound
chambers, unsealed so as not to hide its pleasing scent.
This flute also plays the "Gypsy scale" and the full octave of the Bb major
scale,
as heard in the sound sample. Crushed Turquoise has been
inlaid
in many of the knots. Deer leather lacing
with Turquoise and Brass beads secures the
bird to its nest. To help prevent wet-out, the bird has been
fitted with a cedar heartwood shoe,
and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the
bottom of the air chamber. The branch for this flute
came from a relative's ranch in Oklahoma.
