Measuring 18"
in length, this unsplit Ginkgo branch flute has a sweet
and clear, spirit-filled voice, playing three
upper register notes. Considered
a "living fossil", the Ginkgo biloba tree dates back 56 million years
to
the age of the dinosaurs. About seven million years ago the
glaciers
pushed the Ginkgo out of North America and Europe, but
the species somehow survived in
two small areas in the Zhejing province in eastern China, where it is
now considered native. So to honor the spirit of this
magnificent, beautiful
and
very ancient tree species, this Ginkgo branch flute has been tuned to
the key of A major, pentatonic Modes 2 & 5, allowing
for the
traditional scale of China, the Chinese folk
song "Jasmine Flower" heard in part of the sound sample.
In Mode 2 you can even play songs from "Middle Earth", as
heard in the sound sample! Playing in Mode 5 allows for
traditional songs like Amazing Grace, easily played in the
lower register with no half-holing. The Mode 2&5 tuing can
even play the seven tone major scale without
half-holing! All 13 knot holes, spiraling
around the branch, have been inlaid with crushed Jade. Deer
leather lacing, with Jade and brass beads
hold
the
bird to the nest. To
help prevent
wet-out, the bird has
been
fitted with a redwood shoe, for its absorption qualities,
and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been designed into the
bottom of the air chamber.
