Measuring
23 1/2"
in
length, with a 1" diameter sound chamber, this unsplit Coast
Redwood (Sequoia
sempervirens ) branch
flute has a clear, soulful voice and is accurately tuned to
a low Dmaj mode 2/5
pentatonic scale,
playing 4 upper register tones. Some of the rough bark has
been left on, contrasting nicely with the finely
finished sapwood
and darker heartwood. All knot holes and a few surface
checks have been inlaid with
crushed Malachite stone. To aid against wet-out,
the bird
has been fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe, for its absorption
qualities, and a drain hole has been designed into the air
chamber. Deer
lacing
with Malachite and brass
beads holds
the
bird to the nest, while covering the drain hole.
