Most of
the beautiful bark that gives it its name
has
been left on
this unsplit Red Ironbark Eucalyptus
(Eucalyptus
tricarpa) branch
flute. Measuring 15 3/4" in
length, it is tuned to a high D#m modes 1&4
pentatonic scale, with a
sweet, brightly expressive voice that plays
4
upper octave notes. A bit of crushed malachite has been
inlaid into the bird and a small knot just above the 4th hole.
Other knots, though well sealed,
have been left alone to show the natural beauty of this tree
species.
Deer lacing
with malachite and brass beads holds the bird to the nest. To
help prevent wetout, the
bird
has been fitted
with
a
redwood shoe
and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, gas been designed into the air
chamber. The branch
for this flute was gathered with love, respect and gratitude from a
tree that had been cut down along San
Marcos
Creek, in preparation for a development project. But the
spirit
of that beautiful tree lives on in this flute!
