Measuring 17 3/4"
in
length, with four tuning holes, this
unsplit Coast
Redwood
(Sequoia
sempervirens ) branch
flute
is tuned and voiced to a clear, bright and warm Bm modes
1&4
pentatonic scales, playing 3 upper octave notes as
well
as the gypsy scale. Much of the characteristic
red
bark has been left on, contrasting nicely
with the exposed, finely finished lighter colored sapwood. To
insure the bark's continued adhearance to the wood, it has been well
sealed with a non-toxic finish. All knot
holes have been inlaid with
crushed malachite stone. Deer
lacing
with malachite and brass
beads holds
the
bird to the nest. To aid against wet-out (the build-up of
breath
condensation in the air chamber that can clog up the windway), the bird
has been fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe and a drain hole has been
designed into the air chamber, covered by the lacing.
