sound sample of this flute configured as shown in photo below configured as shown in the four photos below, corks on the right side lifted during the course of the song
This unsplit forked Poplar is one very
special branch flute! Or, it could be thought of
as many
special branch flutes in one! To begin with, the
larger
diameter side has a nice, purring, controlable warble
on the
fundamental, as heard in the first and third sound
samples.
With all of
the corks removed, both sides, tuned to an F
minor pentatonic
scale, combine to play 2 1/3 octaves. There
are many
possible arrangemenst of the corks, with either side
functioning as the
harmony drone, making this a very versatile flute.
Measuring
21 1/2"
in length, the bark has been sanded down on each side
at the tone holes
and at the mouth end, exposing the finely finished
beauty of the Poplar
wood grain, in contrast to the natural bark
exterior.
A
few bark fissures have been
inlaid with crushed malachite and malachite beads have
been attached to
the tops of each cork. Deer lacing
with malachite and brass beads
holds
the
bird to the nest. To help resist wet-out, both
birds have
been
fitted with redwood shoes,
and a drain hole, covered by the lacing, has been
designed into the
bottom of each air chamber. The
forked branch for this flute was gathered from a
storm-downed Poplar
tree that grew along Discovery Lake in San Marcos,
CA.
