Measuring
20"
in
length,
with
four tuning holes, this
unsplit Birch ( Betula
papyrifera
) branch
flute
has
been
accurately tuned with a clear, sweet voice to a 6 holed G
minor
pentatonic scale, playing two upper octave notes. Some
of the
birch
bark has
been left on, a nice tactile and visual contrast to the
exposed and
finely finished, spalted wood grain. Knots and
transition areas
from bark to wood have been inlaid with
crushed turquoise stone. To
aid against
wet-out (the
build-up of
breath condensation that can clog the windway of the flute)
the bird
has been fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe, for its
absorption
qualities, and a drain hole has been designed into the air
chamber. Elk lacing with turquoise nuggets and brass
beads
holds the bird to the nest.
