Ponderosa
Pine (Pinus ponderosa)
branch flute,
creating a nice contrast with the finely
finished, exposed wood grain. Measuring 15 3/4" in
length, it is
accurately tuned to a
sweet and stable B minor pentatonic scale, playing three
upper octave
notes. All knot holes have been inlaid with
crushed
malachite. To aid against wet-out (the build-up of
breath condensation that can clog the windway of the
flute) the bird
has been fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe, for its
absorption
qualities, and a drain hole has been designed into the
air
chamber. Elk
lacing
with malachite and red horn bone
beads holds
the
bird to the nest.
