Measuring 20"
in length, with four tuning holes, this unsplit Coast
Redwood (Sequoia
sempervirens ) branch
flute is accurately tuned and voiced to a sweet and
stable G minor pentatonic scale, playing 3 upper octave
notes. Much of the characteristic red bark has
been left on, contrasting beautifully with the exposed
and finely finished wood grain. All knot holes
have been inlaid with crushed turquoise. To
aid against wet-out (the build-up of breath condensation
that can clog the windway of the flute) the bird has
been fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe, for its
absorption qualities, and a drain hole has been designed
into the air chamber. Elk lacing with turquoise
and red horn bone beads holds the bird to the nest,
while covering the drain hole.
