Some
of the bark has been left on this
unsplit Toyon (
Heteromeles
arbutifolia)
branch
flute, creating a beautiful contrast
with the finely
finished wood grain, small knots having
been inlaid with
crushed
Sleeping
Beauty
Turquoise. Measuring 20
5/8"
in length, with a 3/4" sound chamber
diameter, and acurately tuned to a
sweet and clear G minor
pentatonic, it plays a wonderfully
passionate and controlable
warble
on
the fundamental, also playing at least
three upper octave notes.
Elk
lacing
with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and red
horn bone beads holds the bird
to the
nest. To aid against wetout, the
bird has been fitted with a
redwood shoe and the air chamber has a
drain hole, covered by the
lacing. The branch for this one of
a kind flute was gathered with
love, care
and respect along the banks of San
Marcos Creek in southern
California.
