Measuring
21"
in length, with a 1" diameter sound chamber, this 6
holed, unsplit
Arroyo
Willow (Salix
lasiolepis) branch flute
is accurately tuned
to an F# minor
pentatonic scale, playing modes 1 & 4 & the
Gypsy scale, as
well as 2 upper octave notes. Turquoise
has been inlaid in
the
knot holes as well as the wonderful crevace that
resulted from diamonding
on
this willow branch. Elk lacing
with turquoise and horn bone
beads holds
the
bird to the nest, the bird wearing a
redwood heartwood shoe
to aid against wetout. The
branch for this flute was gathered along San Marcos
Creek, in San Diego County, CA amongst a wild grove of
willow trees.
California Indians
found many uses for the wonderful willow tree,
including bows, baskets,
shelters, clothing, fish traps and medicines derived
from salicin
in the willow's bark, the original aspirin. So this willow flute
may well be a cure for
the headache of a stressful day.
