Mountain Cherry Trees in Japan Most
of
the
wonderful
bark has been left on this unsplit Japanese Mountain
Cherry branch flute
(Prunus serrulata var. spontanea), with six Jade cabachons set in the knots and surface crevices in the exposed wood inlaid with crushed Jade stone. Measuring 17" in length and accurately tuned to an A# minor pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, it plays the Gypsy scale as well as 3 upper octave notes. Elk lacing with Jade and brass beads holds the bird to the nest, the bird fitted with a redwood heartwood shoe to help prevent wet-out. The branch for this flute came directly from Japan, where Mountain Cherry Blossoms are known as Yamazakura. Also of interest, Kabazaiku is the 200 year old art form in Japan of making woodworks out of cherry tree bark.
