White
Birch
(Betula papyrifera)
branch
flute is tuned to a high D minor
pentatonic,
modes 1 & 4, playing three upper octave notes. Much of the very characteristic birch bark has been left on, though removed at the tone holes to take the wall thickness down in that area to less the 1/4". Spalting of the wood grain has occured at the mouth end and on the sides of the bird, adding a touch of natural artistry to the wood. The whole flute is finely finished and all knots have been inlaid with crushed turquoise. Turquoise has also been inalid, in some areas, at the bark/wood grain transition, as seen in the photos. Elk lacing with turquoise and brass beads holds the bird to the nest.
