Most of the bark, the
smooth, dark brown underlayer as
well as a bit of the rougher outer layer, has
been
left
on this unsplit California Peppertree (Schinus molle) branch flute, contrasting nicely with the exposed wood grain. Measuring 17 1/2" in length it is tuned to an Bb minor pentatonic scale, modes 1 & 4, playing 2 upper octave notes. The small knot holes and a couple surface checks have been inlaid with crushed turquoise. Elk lacing with turquoise and horn bone beads holds the bird to the nest, the bird wearing a Redwood heartwood shoe to help prevent wet-out.
