Some
of
the
surface and underlayer bark has been left on this unsplit,
finely
finished Toyon (Heteromeles
arbutifolia)
branch
flute. All of the tiny knots have been inlaid with
crushed malachite stone. Measuring 22"
in length and
tuned to an F# minor
pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, it plays 3
upper octave notes and has a wonderful controlable warble
on the
fundamental note. Elk lacing
with malachite and red horn bone beads holds the bird to
the
nest. To aid against wetout, the bird has been
fitted with a
redwood shoe and a drain hole has been designed into the
air
chamber. The branch for this one of a kind flute was
gathered
with love and respect at the beautiful Descanso
Gardens.
