This Native American style,
unsplit Camellia
branch
flute, which grew at the
beautiful Descanso
Gardens (home to North America's largest Camellia
collection),
has
a
wonderful, silky smooth finish to it and a sweet,
stable, clear
voice to match! A few bark inclusions are left on,
contrasting
nicely with the finely finished wood grain. Measuring
21 1/2"
in
length, with four tuning holes, it is
accurately tuned to a G minor pentatonic scale
playing three upper
octave notes as well as the Gypsy Scale. All
knot holes have been inlaid with crushed malachite.
Elk
lacing,
with
red
horn bone and malachite beads holds the bird to the
nest. To aid against wet-out (the build-up of breath
condensation that
can clog the windway of the flute) the bird has been
fitted with a
redwood heartwood shoe, for its absorbtion
qualities, and a drainhole
has been designed into the air chamber, kept covered
by the
lacing.
