Measuring 16" in length, this unsplit White Birch (Betula papyrifera) branch flute is tuned to B minor pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, playing three upper octave notes as well as the Gypsy scale. Some of the very characteristic birch bark has been left on, at the mouth end, the bark removed south of the bird revealing the beautiful spalting of the wood grain. The whole flute is finely finished and all knots have been inlaid with crushed Sleeping Beauty turquoise. Turquoise has also been inalid at the bark/wood grain transition, as seen in the photos. Elk lacing with turquoise and brass beads holds the bird to the nest, the bird fitted with a redwood shoe to aid against wetout.
