English
Walnut
trees along San
Marcos Creek where the branch for this flute was gathered.
The
bark, covered with colorful, well-preserved lichen, has
been left on
this unsplit English Walnut (Juglans
regia) branch
flute, making this a truly unique, interesting and naturally beautiful
instrument. But don't let the ruggedness of this flute fool
you. It
has a sweet, mellow voice, as heard in the sound sample. Measuring
21 3/4" in length and tuned to F# minor
pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, it plays the Gypsy scale as well as 3
upper octave notes. All knot
holes have been inlaid with crushed serpentine
stone. Deer lacing
with serpentine and brass beads holds the bird to the nest. The branch
for this flute was gathered along San Marcos
Creek, in San Diego County, CA amongst a wild grove of English Walnut
trees.
