Some
of the bark has been left on this unsplit Toyon (Heteromeles
arbutifolia)
branch
flute, creating a wonderful contrast with the warm, reddish hue
of the wood. A few bark and wood crevices have been inlaid with
crushed Sleeping Beauty
Turquoise, the larger natural crevices of the branch left unfilled,
though well sealed (along with all the bark) to insure adherence to the
wood. Measuring 22 1/4"
in length and tuned to G minor
pentatonic, modes 1 & 4, it plays the Gypsy scale as well as 3
upper octave notes. Elk lacing
with Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and amber beads holds the bird to the
nest, the bird fitted with a redwood shoe to aid against wet out.
The branch for this one of a kind flute was gathered at the beautiful Descanso
Gardens, where Toyon grows as an important member of the native
chaparral
community.
